Artist Statement

This body of work demonstrates an ongoing interest and commitment to developing a personal visual vocabulary and sensibility. The work is involved in a reductive method to pare down visual elements while pushing the boundaries of perception. The artist has chosen a visual vocabulary that eliminates color for the most part, while concentrating on making visible what is barely there. Sometimes the content is contained in a form and other times, those boundaries are extended to include walls and floor and ceiling. The wood pieces applied to the surfaces are fragmented and stained white to allow light to play an instrumental role on the surface by way of shadows. Scale is an element whereby the viewer can approach a piece, or be confronted by a piece which is towering over or tilted towards the viewer, or in the case of the floor pieces, the viewer towers over them -- each perspective engaging the viewer in a different experience. The common thread that permeates the work is the striving for an ordering of the visual elements while maintaining or harnessing their complexity.
